NEED IDENTIFICATION - SOUTH AFRICA

An instruction received from an Australian non-profit organisation to assess and perform a feasibility study of the rural community of Potsdam outside of East London, exploring the possibility of establishing an HIV/AIDS Orphan Village. Together with identifying orphans, their carers and their households, further information was gathered to assess the standard of living and physical circumstances of the orphans and their carers.

Through the study and evaluation of the information gathered on the forty-four orphans, all of whom were cared for by the community, Gateway Services advised the client that there was no need for the creation of an AIDS orphan village in Potsdam.

A need identified within the orphan households was that of the establishment of a job creation project, which would address and facilitate vocational training.
